Digitalis 'Serendipity' is an exciting new digitalis hybrid raised at Hillier Nurseries by expert propagator and plantsman Alan Postill; one of series of crosses involving the ground-breaking Digitalis Saltwood Summer shown in The Artists Garden in 2002. 'Serendipity' shows the fascinating split tubular flowers and delicately waved petals which give this strain of foxgloves their orchid-like appearance. It forms a strong rosette of mid-green leaves and produces tall flower spikes reaching 1.2m or more. Planted early in the season it will establish quickly and can either be left to bloom and set seed, some of which will be fertile, or it can be cut back immediately after flowering to form a multi-headed rosette which will produce several spikes the next year.
Naturally flowering in June, it is a lovely plant for naturalistic planting schemes or to associate with roses and perennials in a mixed border.
