Philadelphus maculatus 'Sweet Claire' is a wonderful new variety with slender stems and small, narrow, silver-green leaves, forming an airy shrub up to 1.2m in height. The arching stems carry delicate, downward-facing, white flowers softly blotched with deep crimson in the centre of the flower around golden stamens. The scent is heavy, sweet and delicious and stronger than that of most other mock oranges. The plant requires no regular pruning; some of the flowering stems can be removed immediately after flowering every few years to preserve the airy nature of this wonderful shrub. An excellent plant for an open sunny position, good on dry soil, excellent on chalk but will grow on any soil type. Sweet Clare, named after Maurice's daughter, was discovered in the garden of plantsman Maurice Foster by John Hillier.
Managing Director Andy McIndoe spotted the plant's potential after planting it in his garden.
