Copper coloured winter stems are already bursting with plump buds, set to burst into emerald green leaves, and fully double rosette blooms of deep cerise. It starts to bloom in early spring and in my garden often still has blooms when I get home from Chelsea Flower Show hows that for endurance? It grows to around 1 metre (3 feet) in height with a similar spread and thrives in sun or shade on any soil. Its a great plant to grow under trees but I love it in sun or semi-shade where I can grow it with anything with purple leaves a stunning combination with those cerise blooms. Try underplanting it with purple-leaved heucheras against a sapphire blue ceanothus simply stunning. This plant is a tried and tester performer, but is rarely offered for sale.
