Witch Hazels really are the most magical plants in the winter garden. Their delicate blooms brave the weather; they survive frost and snow unscathed to fill the garden with their exquisite perfume. Their twisted, translucent petals catch the low winter light, and they possess a jewel-like quality as they cling to the naked branches. I love them all, but as with all plants some varieties are better than others. Not the best known, but for me one of the most exquisite, Hamamelis x intermedia Vesna is a real gem. The blooms smother the branches in winter, and they are deliciously fragrant: sweet, spicy and exotic Pure Jo Malone in the garden. This variety has exceptionally long petals, and the flowers are large compared to others: orange and gold with a touch of deep red close to the stem; somewhat reminiscent of the flesh and stone of a luscious peach. Hillier grow fantastic Witch Hazels. These start life in the field in Hampshire before being transferred to generous 3 litre pots to be grown on for sale.
Whats more you havent got to wait until next winter to enjoy your witch hazel. This variety has truly spectacular red and orange autumn colour: Its a plant that works really hard to earn its keep in your garden!
